Applied Epidemiology Institute

Experiential Competency on the Practice of Applied Epidemiology. Development & deployment of Epidemiology Designs in public health/healthcare investigations, implementation science, continuous quality improvement, & translation of evidence-based findings into real world solutions for health improvement.

Rooted in the Real World, Solving Real-World Grand Challenges in Health/Public Health!

Applied Epidemiology Design Innovations

Epidemiology Collaboration

Real-World Focus & Emphasis
The Applied Epidemiology Institute focuses on integration of Applied Epidemiology designs within EASeL methods CIISLEARNing in experiential (Col)Lab-R-tory projects undertaken to advance real-world evidence-based policy, practice & implementation-program innovation in support of health improvement innovation.
To advance these objectives, the Institute collaborates with other institutes and external partners/participants to host a number of key interlocking real-world offerings for advancement of experiential competencies in the Innovation of Applied Epidemiology Solutions Design within an integrated EASeL Framework.

IEPH’s Virtual Ecosystem for Real-World/Experiential CIISLEARNing
IEPH’s online platforms offer a global virtual ecosystem through which the Institute organizes an affiliated College which benchmarks and hosts Real World Scholar Programs (RW-SPs) and EASeL Innovation (Col)Lab-R-tory projects through which low-resourced public health agencies, practitioners, innovators, industry and academic partners can collaborate on capacity augmentation and development of practice-/project-based experiential CIISLEARNing practitioners &/or innovators in the 3 EASeL domains, namely Epidemiology, Analytics and Service-/Project-based e-Learning.

Real World Experiential Advantage

  • The College offers post-graduate/graduate program pathways consisting of a series of experiential Real World Scholar Programs (RW-SPs);
  • EASeL Innovation (Col)Lab-R-tory projects – integrating ecourse-based experiential CIISLEARNing modules/activities within projects undertaken to innovate solutions addressing many real world grand challenges in public health;
  • Real-World e-Colloquium fora which offer guidance, mentorship, & peer review through the global HIIT-CIISLEARNetwork; & ultimately
  • Advancing EASeL capacity augmentation and development towards real-world evidence-based policy, practice & implementation-program innovation in support of population health improvement.

The Real-World Experiential CIISLEANing Model
Rather than employ the sage-on-the-stage model followed by traditional training programs (and even ‘high-powered’ consultants offering solutions with no sustainable skill development), scholars in programs following the experiential CIISLEANing model are guided/mentored through a 3-stage “learning-by-doing” series of eCourse-based (Col)Lab-R-tories – these entail conceptualization/design thinking; innovation & development incl. piloting, implementation, monitoring & evaluation of practice-/project-based experiential CIISLEARNing initiatives (blending online & face-to-face formats within a learning-by-doing framework).

Separate Yourself!

From the Pack!

  • Participation in experiential CIISLEARNing initiatives/projects enables scholars to hone their ability to independently execute similar projects which bridge the disjunction between practice/innovation in real world efforts to address health challenges vs. academic-caliber expertise;
  • In this approach, the integration of EASeL designs enhances technical rigor and excellence in public health practice/innovation by bringing together tightly woven partnerships to address community health needs, such as those referenced above within the paragraph on the “Virtual Ecosystem … ” in models such as the Academic Health Department, Public-Private/Industry project sponsorship, and the Community-Academic-Health Agency, akin to the Academic Medical Center model.

The College of Applied Epidemiology (CAE) in the Applied Epidemiology Institute is responsible for setting and benchmarking competency standards for CAE’s real world experiential programs in the Practice-Scholar Pathway (PSP) & the Practice-Faculty Development Pathway (PFDP).

In PSP & PFDP Programs, EASeL capacity development and augmentation is fulfilled through embedding Practice-Scholars & Faculty-Scholars of the Practice of Applied Epidemiology who undertake service-/project-based (e)learning-by-doing to integrate EASeL designs in development of solutions for real world health challenges in the host-site setting. To ensure the highest standard of solutions developed, PSP program participants undertake course-based experiential service-/project-based CIISLEARNing under the guidance of practitioner and academic subject matter experts/faculty towards fulfillment of program competencies and project requirements. Fulfillment of PSP program competencies is benchmarked by a competency standards-reviewing advisory board including honorary Members and Fellows of the College of Applied Epidemiology convened by the Applied Epidemiology Institute.

There are Three (3) Progressive Levels of Real World/Experiential/Practice-Scholar Pathway (PSP) Programs in the Applied Epidemiology Track.

Projects | Key Objectives of EASeL Innovation (Col)Lab-R-tories within the Institute:
  • Integration of Applied Epidemiology Solutions Design within EASeL methods CIISLEARNing in experiential (Col)Lab-R-tory projects;
  • Integrating expertise at the intersection of the three EASeL domains of Epidemiology, Analytics & Service-/Project-based (e)Learning, IEPH conceptualized the EASeL Innovation (Col)Lab-R-tory Model for the purpose of advancing EASeL capacity augmentation & development initiatives in support of evidence-based solutions and innovations in public health, primary care and program implementation;
